75% of all turning falls within Depth Of Cut (D.O.C.) range between  .020” and .120”.

Many operators are using a ½ inch inscribed circle I.C. 4 insert (e.g. CNMG 432) (.187 thick) to turn this D.O.C. range. 

A 10 pack can be anywhere from $70 to $115.

However, a smaller more economical less expensive 3/8 inch inscribed circle insert I.C. 3 (e.g. CNMG 332) insert that maintains the .187 thickness can handle this range of depth of cut and run at feed rates similar to the larger more expensive I.C. 4 inserts while maintaining durability and tool life.

A 10 pack of these I.C. 3 inserts is around $40.  Switching to the I.C. 3 insert can result in big savings (43%) across your turning operation.

 

                                           


The I.C. 3 small sized inserts provide the same durability and tool life and provide an economical advantage regarding cost per cutting edge over larger more expensive I.C. 4 Inserts.


                                       

 

Make sure the I.C. 3 insert is .187 thick as some manufactures make an I.C. 3 that is only .125 which may be less durable than the ticker insert.   

                                      

For interrupted cuts or a a deeper depth of cut in the .120” to .240” range use the thicker (.250”) CNMG 342 insert to maintain the same savings or switch to the more traditional 1/2 inch inscribed circle I.C.  4  insert CNMG 442.
